Hi-tech notebook covers for youth

Last Updated 14 July 2016, 19:31 IST

An avid gamer, 15-year-old Kunal Sinha was mostly found bent over his gaming device. A student at a leading college in Kolkata, Kunal Sinha has found a new avenue to satisfy his ‘need for speed’.

His notebook now provides the option to connect with his smartphone and play racing games when his hand-held device is out of juice.

Leaving behind drab notebooks, Classmate, India’s leading manufacturer of notebooks and other stationery products, introduced notebooks with covers that come equipped with “augmented reality”.

The technology gives users an opportunity to scan the cover and see a car come alive on the screen of one’s smartphone. The scan leads the user to a multi-player racing game, where one can connect with others from across the country and win exciting prizes.

In a bid to engage younger consumers, ranging from 5 to 20, multi-brand giant ITC introduced a number of new variants in notebooks. Notebooks with ‘Augmented Reality (AR)’ covers is one such variant.

Other variants come with an option to display one’s “selfie” and have inter-changeable covers and those with a variety of superheroes and characters from the stable of Disney and Marvel comics.

According to a senior ITC official, interactive notebooks are “set to change from a passive recording medium to an interactive one”.

“The AR series was launched in June across select cities in India, looking at school and college students from the age of 15  and above. We’ve tied up with Blippar, a third-party mobile application, to develop this one-of-its-kind module. We hope to engage students beyond the core product,” the official said.

Targetting the youth, the ‘selfie’ cover notebooks allow users to customise by adding a selfie of his or her liking. “The concept is apt for the millennials as it provides an opportunity for young consumers to showcase their life moments through selfies and photographs.

The interchangeable cover notebook is inspired by the ever dynamic lifestyle of the Gen-Y. With five different designs on offer, these notebooks let them change a notebook’s look every day of the week,” the official added.
