Action committee for landless and homeless people has staged a dharna in front of deputy commissioners office here on Wednesday, pressing the state government to take necessary steps to fulfill the just demands of the landless and the homeless.

The office-bearers of the action committee said, “Many dalits, nomads, minorities and poor farmers are being denied of land for tilling and home. Because of which, most of them are living in abject poverty. In fact about 50% of the population of the state fall under this category.”

They demanded the state government to take necessary measures to provide plots for the homeless living in both rural and urban areas.

The state and the Centre should combine all housing projects and formulate a comprehensive plan to empower the landless and homeless  by giving them the plots, the action committee members urged.

They also pressed the government to provide patta for land, not exceeding five acres for two years, falling under Ghairana, Gomala, Khumki, Naakane, Nalabarm, Kharejakhata, Paramboke, Paisari among others, being tilled by the farmers to eke out a living.

The government should not evict the tillers from government land or the aforementioned land, they urged.

The original land owners are still holding the possession of the land despite being allotted to the beneficiaries under the Land Reforms Act.

This is more rampant in Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The district or taluk administration should initiate criminal proceedings against the land owners who have not given up the possession, the office-bearers of the action committee demanded.

The protesters pressed the government to file criminal cases against the land grabbers.  It should reclaim the government land and distribute the same to the landless and the homeless people.

Members of Janandolan Swaraj Abhiyan, Jansangram Parishat, Slum Janandolan Samiti, PUCL, Communal Harmony Forum, Raitha Sangha, Sijna Yuva Samvad Kendra, Right To Information (RTI) Activists Forum, Alemari Budakattu Mahasabha among others took part in the protest. N S Pandit, K T Halli, Mallikarjunaiah, Shivakumar, Nandur Kenchappa, Ratnamma, Yetiraj, Puttakammanna, Rangaswamanna ad others were present.
