New vigilance cell to check quality of civic works

The municipal administration department will soon open a vigilance cell to monitor the quality of civic amenity works.

Minister of State for Municipal Administration Eshwar Khandre told reporters in Bengaluru on Friday the cell will comprise senior officials and will receive and attend to complaints from the public regarding poor quality works.

“After receiving complaints, members of the cell will do a reality check. The cell will also have power to initiate action against erring officials and contractors,” the minister said.

The department is also contemplating coming out with a bill to prevent mushrooming of illegal layouts in municipal areas. “We are looking at legislation in other states before drafting our bill,” he said.

Replying to queries, the minister admitted that there has been a delay in utilisation of funds under phase-2 of Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Town Development Programme (also known as Nagarothanna scheme). Of 2,050 works planned under the programme only 1,315 could be completed during the last four years, he said. An action plan has been prepared to complete the pending works by the end of this year.

Khandre said the finance department has given clearance for filling up of 4,344 vacancies in the municipal administration department.
