Three women among nine from Davangere held for fraud

The Yeshwantpur police have arrested nine persons, including three women, for relieving an elderly woman of her gold chain.

Venkatesh, Durgappa, Seshamma, Sushilamma, Nagamma, Anjinappa, Shyamanna, Thippesh and Nagaraj, all residents of Davangere, were arrested by the police. Two gold chains weighing 60 grams were recovered from the arrested persons.

The modus operandi of the gang was to approach elderly women and dupe them of their gold chains. On July 10, one of the women from the gang approached Gowramma, a resident of BK Nagar, near her house while she was walking. The woman told Gowramma that her daughter was unmarried and pregnant and had to be admitted to the hospital. She offered to give Gowramma a gold chain in return for money, said the police.

Gowramma hesitated and did not respond. The woman pleaded with Gowramma and gave her a “gold chain given by her ancestors”. Instead, the suspect asked Gowramma to give her chain which she could pledge and get the money. They both exchanged the gold chains. She assured Gowramma that she would return her pledged gold chain in a few days and asked her to keep the “ancestral gold chain” in her custody.

When Gowramma went home and examined the chain, she found that it was not made of gold. She filed a complaint in Yeshwantpur police station.

Acting on the complaint, the police gathered information about the gang and arrested the suspects. They had earlier cheated another woman in a similar fashion in Yeshwantpur. The gang would come to the city from Davangere, commit the crimes and go back to their home town.
