Forum opposes appointment of retired teachers as college heads

Karnataka State Women’s University (Vijayapura) Vice Chancellor  Sabiha Bhoomigowda on Sunday said organisation is also essential for teachers and it should be a part of life along with teaching and research.

She was speaking as the chief guest at the annual convention of Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (Amuct), at St Agnes College here on Sunday.

She said, “Organisational structure helps teachers to socialise with people and share their knowledge. The actual research starts after the submission of the PhD dissertation work. PhD is the first step of research.”

She said the question of what next haunts lecturers after retirement. They should involve themselves in the fields of their interest, she said.

St Agnes College Principal Sr M Supriya, who was the guest of honour, called upon the teachers to use their experience, wisdom and potential of learning abilities for the service of students and world at large.

Sr Supriya stressed on the need to develop a culture of leadership, team work and cooperation.

The teachers, with their passion for service, must touch the lives of students, she added.
Lecturers attaining superannuation and those who have attained doctoral degrees were felicitated on the occasion.

Sr Supriya released the annual bulletin of Amuct.

Ummappa new president
The 30th annual general body meeting was held prior to the formal function.
The new office-bearers of Amuct for the year 2016- 2018 were elected on the occasion.

Gokarnethshwara College Associate Professor of Commerce Dr Ummappa Poojary was elected as the president of Amuct, while SDM College, Ujire, Associate Prof of Botany Dr Kumara Hegde was elected as the general secretary.

The other office-bearers are Canara College Assistant Professor of Commerce Dejamma (Treasurer), Associate Professor of Secretarial Practice Charles Pais (Vice President I), Vijaya College, Mulki, Associate Professor of Commerce Nagaraj Nayak (Vice President II) and Milagres College, Kallianpur, Associate Prof of Commerce Dr Herald Monis (Joint Secretary).

Resolutions
The meeting resolved to urge the university not to allow retired teachers to be appointed as the principals, directors, administrators of colleges of PG centres coming under its purview; follow a common academic calender for affiliated colleges and autonomous colleges; introduce common ranking list for the affiliated colleges as well as autonomous colleges; liberalise its statutes related to autonomous status to the colleges so that more and more colleges would apply for autonomy in the future; stop all kinds of outsourcing related to end semester examination related work; urge the Collegiate Education Department not to insist on to apply for earned leave when the teachers are
going abroad during vacation and also to request the government to extend all the schemes and facilities adopted for government college students to aided and private college students.

AMUCT President Dr Norbert Lobo, Treasurer Charles Pais and General Secretary Dr Lakshminarayana Bhat A were present.
