Thimmakka chants green mantra in Mangaluru

Environmentalist Saalumarada Thimmakka on Monday said trees have paid dividends to her in different ways.

She was speaking after inaugurating the Environment Club at Besant Women’s College here. Thimmakka said, “My husband and myself had planted trees on both sides of the four kilometres of road. We did not wait for any one’s help. In the days of utter poverty, we were  self-motivated and wanted to fill the void of not having children.” Thimakka said trees provide fresh air and shade, besides giving satisfaction. “Trees are the best things to leave back when we pass away,” she added.

On the occasion, Thimakka planted and watered a sapling to inspire NSS students who function as the ‘Green Army’ at the college.

She also sang a folk song to explain how nature provided for all its creatures without discrimination.

Thimmaka’s son Umesh B N said, “Modern citizens have all the gadgets, but they lack fresh air.” He said technology cannot create clean environment.
