'Action against cabs is contempt of court'

“The recent decision of the district administration to initiate action against app-based cab services is contempt of court,” Dakshina Kannada District Online Taxi Driver and Owners’ Association President B K Imtiyaz said.

Addressing mediapersons here on Tuesday, Imtiyaz said the High Court had issued a temporary order restraining any action against them following a recent appeal by the representatives of Uber and Ola cab aggregators.

“Accordingly, the secretary of the Transport Authority had submitted an affidavit in the court, promising to abide by the order,” Imtiyaz said.

However, as reported in the media, the deputy commissioner announced in a recent meeting of the road safety committee, to initiate action against the online taxi service providers, he said.

Imtiyaz explained that the harassment of taxi drivers had forced the aggregators to switch to online to cater to the customers.

He also said that they were not provided stands as the parking lots at railway stations and airports are being auctioned for lakhs of rupees flouting rules.
