Airport director held by CBI on bribery charges

In a major swoop, the CBI on Saturday night arrested Alok Varshney, the Director of Aurangabad airport of Maharashtra following charges of bribery.

The accused, who is a senior official of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), is being investigated.

He was caught red-handed demanding and accepting Rs 10,000 from the complainant, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials said on Sunday.

A case was registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act , 1988, on a complaint received from a private company based in Malad (West), Mumbai.

“The complainant had said that the Aurangabad airport director was maintaining details of non-scheduled flights and demanding bribe per flight from the ground-handling private companies at Aurangabad Airport. The complainant had further charged that the said officer demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 for allowing workers of his company to carry out the work of ground handling for non-scheduled flights at Aurangabad Airport,” according to CBI officials.

Searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused in Aurangabad and Varanasi, which led to the recovery of incriminating documents, including papers related to the purchase of two residential flats at Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Gurgaon (Haryana) and  various investment papers.
