Seagull spreading its wings in Africa

Last Updated 04 August 2016, 18:28 IST

Everyone outside Africa, and Indians in particular, tend to stereotype the place. On hearing Africa, we tend to think of lush jungles which one can stalk through by joining a Safari. But, Africa is more than that. Ghana’s capital Accra is home to the National Theatre, a beautiful building which houses The National Dance Company, The National Theatre Players and the National Symphony Orchestra.

The National Theatre is located in the Victoriabarg District of Accra and was built by the Chinese and offered as a gift to Ghana. This large structure, which has a building area of 11,896 square metres, is situated in the central part of the city of Accra near the intersection of Independence Avenue and Liberia Road. What is spectacular about this building is that when it is seen from a distance the structure looks like a huge ship or more accurately a seagull spreading its wings.

The Theatre is an ideal place to hold events like conferences, seminars, awards nights, workshops, artistic presentations, receptions, general meetings, parties etc. With an uninterrupted supply of electricity, the National Theatre has become a popular venue for hosting international events.

The Stanbic Heights district is home to many of this tropical metropolis’s newest boutiques, galleries and brasseries, which eludes attitude yet in a charming way. “Something is happening here,” says the Lebanon-born Nada Moukarzel, who has lived in Ghana’s capital for 20 years. A lot of Ghanaian professionals are coming home from places like New York and London, because they’re attracted by the city’s friendliness and relaxed way of life.

The National Art Theatre of Accra is semi-commercial and plays several functions and meets world standards. It is equipped for unique customer-oriented programming in contemporary and traditional Arts.
