The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), as a part of B R Ambedkar 125th birth anniversary, has organised several events for corporators, officials and civic workers in the month of August.

Events such as cultural competition, sports activities, seminar on ‘Ambedkar’ and ‘Civic Workers’, and felicitation to civic workers have been planned at different platforms on different days. The events will commence from August 8 with cultural activities.

Speaking to reporters here, on Saturday, Mayor B L Bhyrappa said, “On the inaugural day, cultural competitions have been organised at Town Hall in the city. Events like mono-acting, fancy dress and singing competitions have been scheduled. On August 14, sports event like cricket, kabaddi and drawing competition for civic workers’ children have been organised at Chamundi Vihar Stadium. A seminar on Ambedkar and civic workers have been organised on August 19 at Town Hall. The Mayor said that professionals will speak about Ambedkar and about the role of pourakarmikas.

The Mayor said, “There are 600 permanent and 1,600 contract pourakarmikas in the city and all of them will be honoured as a part of the jayanti. The civic body had organised a health check-up camp for civic workers recently and a few of them were suffering from health ailments. MCC offered them treatment at Apollo Hospital.”

“The civic workers are asking for bonus, but, as per norms no bonus could be paid to them,” the Mayor added.

New commissioner

Bhyrappa said that he has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and District in-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa to appoint a  commissioner to the MCC. “At present, Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Commissioner M Mahesh is the in-charge commissioner of MCC. It is difficult to take decisions without a permanent commissioner. The government has agreed to appoint a commissioner soon. The commissioner’s post is vacant after C G Betsurmath retired on July 30,” the Mayor said.

Crematorium functioning

“The hi-tech crematorium at Vijayanagar in the city, developed by the MCC, started functioning from Saturday. However, it has not been inaugurated officially. The civic body has deputed employees at the crematorium and all the basic facilities, including platform to perform rituals, bathrooms among others are made available on the premises,” the Mayor said.
