The police said four houses were also damaged during the exchange of fire. The encounter started on Wednesday and ended after 30 hours on Thursday afternoon.

Defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar said the operation was jointly carried out by the army and police. He said four top militants of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed.

He said the army lost Capt Deepak Sharma in the encounter.  “The officer was martyred after killing two militants in a fierce gun fight in the densely populated and heavy build up area.

Capt Deepak Sharma, who is from Rohtak in Haryana, was commissioned in Corps of Signals in September 2006,” Lt Col Brar said.

The spokesman identified the militants as Midha, Shabir and Khalid, top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in South Kashmir.

Midha and Shabir had been active in militant activities in the last over 50 years, the defence spokesman said.
