In a case of the ‘saas-bahu’ rivalry becoming deadly, a 28-year-old woman killed her mother-in-law by slitting her throat with a knife and made it look like a murder for gain. The incident occurred at Subramanya Layout in Ramamurthy Nagar, east Bengaluru, on August 8.

Nazira Baig, a Montessori teacher, came home from the school and picked a fight with her mother-in-law Badrunnisa. The two got into fisticuffs. In a fit of rage, Nazira picked a knife and slit Badrunnisa’s throat. As her mother-in-law lay on the floor writhing in pain and then succumbed to injuries, Nazira took out Rs 2 lakh in cash and gold jewellery kept in the cupboard. She concealed the cash and valuables under a bed and sneaked out of home, as if nothing happened.

Nazira’s husband, Imran Saab, who runs a poultry shop nearby, came home and was stunned to find his mother lying dead. He called out the neighbours for help. The jurisdictional Ramamurthy Nagar police arrived at the spot soon.

During the investigation, it emerged that the cash and valuables were missing from the cupboard. Police suspected it to be a murder for gain. But when they questioned Nazira, they observed bruises on her hands and neck. When asked how she sustained the injuries, she gave an unconvincing reply. But when police subjected her to intense questioning, she reportedly confessed to the crime. She said she acted in a fit of rage.

According to Nazira, she had frequent fights with her mother-in-law. She was angry that Badrunnisa pocketed all the earnings of her husband and gave little money to her.
Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by Imran Saab.
