Asian champion Sudha Singh was the favourite to win the 3000M steeplechase but she left plenty of questions unanswered as she pulled out before the last hurdle in the final on Wednesday.
Sudha was in lead but she seemed to be struggling after the final water jump and with fellow Railway athlete Chinta Yadav closing in and almost overtaking her, she just gave up and went off track, with a DNF coming up against her name (Did Not Finish). “I was feeling tired and my legs were trembling,” mumbled Sudha, who had taken a commanding lead before the final lap. Coach Nikolai Snesarev, looking on, offered no comment.
Chinta, who was previously under Snesarev, won the gold in 9:49.23.
