Wildlife expert Sajay Gubbi has said that there were more than 180 tigers in the forests of Chamarajanagar district and the community has the responsibility to protect these wild animals.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the Nature Conservation Foundation here recently, Gubbi said that there 110 tigers in the Bandipur National Park, 55 at BRT Reserve and 15 at Cauvery and Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuaries. More than 150 leopards can be found in both the wildlife sanctuaries, he said.

With the human population being more than 50,000 in both MM Hills and Cauvery sanctuaries, steps have been taken to reduce pressure on the forest and wild animals. The Forest department has distributed LPG cylinders to those residing in the forest and the Foundation will also extend the facility, he added.

3D maps of BRT Reserve

Biligiri Ranganathaswami Tiger Reserve director S S Lingaraju said that the 3D maps of the BRT Reserve were being captured using drone cameras.  “The 3D images will give complete details on the height of the trees and other information. There are coffee estates and tribal hamlets in the BRT range. Their pictures too will be captured. This will help in preventing encroachment on forests,” he added.

BRT range comes under the Revenue department. Hence, the deputy commissioner had been requested to take action for removing illegal resorts and homestays, Lingaraju added. He said that compared to previous years, the incidences of wildfires in BRT range have come down.

He disclosed that a honey badger has been sighted in the district. Similar sighting had been recorded in Bannerghatta and Sathyamangala.
