Join hands for development, says minister

Science and Technology and District In-charge Minister M R Seetharam on Monday appealed to the people to join hands to work in unison for the development of the district.

He was delivering the Independence Day address after unfurling the national flag at the 70th Independence Day programme organised at Old Fort premises here.Seethram said the issues disturbing the district will be solved on priority basis within a set time frame.

Listing the achievements of Congress-led state government, Seetharam said efforts are being made to address poverty, hunger, impoverishment, illiteracy, inequality and unemployment by implementing various programmes like ‘Anna Bhagya’, ‘Ksheera Bhagya’, ‘Runamuktha Bhagya’,’Krishi Bhagya’, ‘Sooru Bhagya’, ‘Manaswini’, ‘Maithri’ and ‘Vidyasiri’ people-friendly programmes.

Seetharam said Rs 3.71 crore has been set aside for the Agriculture Department in the district to distribute seeds, organic manure, agriculture equipment and insecticides. To encourage organic farming, a dedicated programme has been launched in 13 hoblis in the district, he added.

Under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee (PMKSY) programme, the state Watershed Department will take up works on farm and suspension ponds at an estimated cost of Rs 1.52 crore. There is no dearth of fodder in the district. The available 50,414 metric tonnes of fodder will last 13 weeks, he said.

To encourage fisheries, it has been decided to restore the state’s only mahsir fish breeding centre at Harangi at a cost of Rs 1 crore, under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, he added.

The minister said roads in the district will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3.25 acrore and an action plan has already been prepared for development of rural roads, especially under chief minister’s Rural Roads Development Project. A 2.8 km road leading to Mallalli falls will concretised at an estimated cost of Rs 3.19 crore under Nabard programme, he added.

He said the district has topped in ‘Podi Muktha Grama Yojane’ and separate pahanis (RTCs) have been issued, after mapping the land with multiple ownership in all 56 villages in the district.

As many as 4,000 people have been benefitted till date and the survey work on at 15 villages (five villages in each taluk). It will be extended to all villages, he noted.The minister said K Nidugane, Koodige and Ponnampet Gram Panchayats have been selected for Gandhi Gram award for this year.
