District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa said, “We should launch a ‘Fit India’ movement similar to the ‘Quit India’ movement of 1942 to eradicate inequality to make Independence meaningful.”

Delivering his Independence Day speech, here, at the Bannimantap Stadium, on Monday, after unfurling the Tri-Colour, he said, “Like we chanted ‘Quit India’ against the British, we should fight against social evils inequality, poverty and caste system.”

“Till date, whatever we have achieved is due to our firm belief in ‘unity in diversity’. For all the backwardness, we are suffering from, inequality, illiteracy and superstitions are the causes. So, all should unitedly fight against illiteracy, ignorance and caste divides for nation building,” he said.

Commending the sacrifice of the armed forces in defending the unity and integrity of the nation, the minister said, “Some divisive forces have taken to violence by wielding guns. Education is the only solution for all social evils and the highway to prosperity. So, the governments have been focussing on ‘education for all’.”

“The freedom struggle, that started with the 1857 revolt, was significant, which eventually turned into a non-violent and satyagraha movement. Many people have sacrificed their lives for the freedom, so protecting it, is everybody’s responsibility. Economic development should go hand-in-hand with social development. The nation can be described only when all citizens are self-sufficient and self-reliant. Women and children should be empowered,” he said.

Earlier, people took out processions and burst firecrackers in the midnight to celebrate the Independence Day at Siddappa Square, Narayana Shastri Road, Nanjumalige and other areas in the city. Flag was hoisted by the members of Mysuru District and City Freedom Fighters’ Association at Freedom Fighters Park on the premises of Subbrayana Kera.

The Independence Day was celebrated by hoisting national falg by the University of Mysore, Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University, Karnataka State Open University, Institution of Engineers, Mysuru Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hotel Owners’ Association, political parties, educational institutions, government departments on the premises of their respective office buildings, people’s organisations, religious institutions, etc.
