MLA Devaraj razes portion of his building on SWD

The Chickpet MLA R V Devaraj on Wednesday razed a portion of his commercial building on H Siddaiah Road near Shanthinagar after learning that it was on a stormwater drain.

Even before the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials reached there with the bulldozers, the senior Congress MLA decided to remove the encroachment.

“I do not want any favour to save my property. There should not be two sets of rules for me and others. I myself decided to remove the portion of my building before the BBMP staff come here,” Devaraj said.

He said that he had bought the building way back in 1960 and nobody had told him about the presence of any drain.

“The 1955 survey report shows the existence of a drain, although flooding has never happened here. I did not dispute the drain’s presence on my property.” The BBMP has so far demolished six buildings on H Siddaiah Road and a few more buildings are likely to be razed. The BBMP extended its stormwater drain encroachment removal drive to other areas of the city and razed many structures on Wednesday.

The Palike officials brought down six houses in Kyalasanahalli in K R Puram and five buildings in Srinivasapura in Yelahanka.

The BBMP suspended the demolition drive at Doddabommasandra following public outrage. People sought time to take out their belongings from their houses. Officials gave them a day's time and said that they will resume the drive with full force from Thursday.
