Encroachment eviction: Dismissing residents' plea for time, BBMP continues the demolition drive

Continuing the drive against buildings on stormwater drains, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Thursday demolished three buildings at Halagevaderahalli in Rajarajeshwari Nagar (RR Nagar).

The drive led by the BBMP’s RR Nagar joint commissioner Dr B Veerabhadrappa started in the morning. People started razing their buildings on their own and sought some more time to complete the process. But the Palike officials turned down their pleas and brought down the structures.

Nataraj, a house owner, sought some more time so that he could take out the wooden doors and windows. But the BBMP staff did not oblige. This led to an altercation between Nataraj and the Palike officers. He said the BBMP did not give him a chance to vacate the building and take out the valuables.

Mahalinge Gowda, one of the persons affected by Thursday's demolition drive, said there the Palike was following two set of rules – one for the rich and the other for the poor. “It is the poor people who are being targeted while the big builders have not been touched. The Palike sends notices to these builders but in our case no notices are served,” said Gowda.

Two marriage halls, Padmavathi Kalyana Mantapa and Meenakshi Kalyana Mantapa belonging to Thiruchi Swamigala Charitable Trust were also demolished. As the Palike officers marked the two buildings for demolition, the Trust officials proposed to raze them on their own but they could not remove the sturdy structures. Finally, the Palike officials bulldozed them. The Trust manager Nagaraju was upset with the BBMP for not giving them time.

“There was a holiday for two days because of which we could not demolish the encroached portion. Today we appealed to them to give us some more time but the BBMP officers were in no mood to listen to us,” Nagaraju said.
