2 e-toilets to come up in M'luru

The Mangaluru City Corporation has proposed the setting up of two modular e-toilets in the city to address the issue of lack of cleanliness in public toilets.

Speaking to DH, Mangaluru City Corporation Health, Education and Social Justice Standing Committee president Kavita Sanil said that quotation has been invited for the construction of two e-toilets by the Corporation. The construction of the toilets will be completed within a month. The location for the setting up of e-toilets will be finalised shortly, she added.

As the public toilet facilities are poor, it is not surprising to see people, especially men, openly attending nature’s call on walls and the edges of pavements near bus stands. The worst affected are women, who do not find clean toilets to use, explained Sanil.

She added that the MCC has also submitted proposals to nationalised banks and builders on construction and maintenance of e-toilets. “The e-toilets are hi-tech and environmental friendly. The MCC has held meetings with State Bank of India, State Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC, Syndicate Bank, Karnataka Bank and Bank of Maharashtra to sponsor e-toilet facilities in the city. The bankers as well as builders have shown interest to develop e-toilets under their Corporate Social Responsibility activities,” she said.

“The public can use these toilets at a nominal amount which would be finalised by the MCC. The doors of the toilets will open at the insertion of the amount. The floors will be flushed clean automatically. In addition, the e-toilets will have tissue papers and napkins for people to use,” Sanil explained.

As it will have napkin-vending machine along with the disposal facility, it will ensure that women have clean and hygienic toilets. Also, the toilets would not require men to clean as they have inbuilt sensors which clean as and when required. Each e-toilet will have 250-litre capacity storage water tank.

Kavitha Sanil said that, according to the guidelines of the central government, there should be one public toilet at every one-kilometre distance. “For Mangaluru to reach the top slot in cleanliness, the City Corporation will have to initiate measures to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. The e-toilets would come with attractive kiosks and would be designed in a certain way to avoid wastage of water,” she assured.

“The MCC is yet to finalise the locations for the e-toilets, however, they will come up at strategic locations,” said Mayor Harinath.
