Palike starts building drains

Last Updated 24 August 2016, 20:52 IST

After demolishing structures on stormwater drains, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) has started constructing concrete drains at Avani Sringeri Nagar at Arakere.

Many buildings were razed by the BBMP to clear stormwater drains to prevent flooding in future. After razing buildings, the BBMP started construction work. The drains will connect  the main drain that leads to Hulimavu lake.

Meanwhile, BBMP may deploy a hi-tech “walking excavator” called Octopus to desilt drains in Dollar’s Colony near RMV Extension. A firm, which manufactures these machines, had approached BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad to give a demonstration on Wednesday morning. “If it works, then we will consider purchasing them or hiring them,” said a BBMP engineer.

No stay on engineers’ suspension
The High Court has refused to stay the government order, suspending 20 BBMP engineers for granting permission to construct buildings on stormwater drains.

The petitioner, Guruprasad M V, Assistant Director, Town Planning, Rajarajeshwarinagar, had approached the court, seeking a stay on the government order dated August 11. The petitioner has contended that the charges against him do not amount to misconduct or dereliction of duty. He also termed BBMP’s action as selective. The suspension is based on the preliminary report, without any prima facie evidence for dereliction of duty, he says. The judge adjourned the hearing to September 6.
