Reaching a milestone

This photograph was taken on May 15, 1982 when the then President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy laid the foundation stone for the World Trade Centre project of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI). The World Trade Centre building was inaugurated by Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar Bahadur, the ‘Yuvaraja’ of Mysore in 1931.

The picture brings back a flood of memories to me as it was an important event in the history of FKCCI. For me, it was an honour and privilege to be able to spend some time with Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy. I remember Sanjeeva Reddy as a very well-informed and humble gentleman who appreciated the efforts of youngsters in helping build a strong nation. He was also quite thrilled to see so many youngsters being involved in the various developmental activities of FKCCI.

As for me, my interest in commerce and industrial relations dates back to my college days. I was born and raised in Bengaluru. I completed my schooling from St Aloysius Boys’ High School in Cox Town and went on to do my graduation in Bachelor of Arts from Dayananda Evening College in Journalist Colony located on JC Road.

I started working when I was very young and went to evening colleges to complete my higher education. I earned my Post-Graduate diploma from St Joseph’s Evening College and MBA from Central College.

My college days were most memorable. Those days, I used to drive down to college in my Ambassador from my house in Cox Town. There weren’t many cars on the road and I used to reach my destination very fast. In fact, it was a pleasure driving on Bengaluru roads then.

After my evening classes, I used to meet my friends in the Century Club sometimes. I was also actively involved with various activities of the Bangalore Management Association even when I was in college. Sports was another interest of mine. I was a part of the college football team and have even played for the ITC Club.

I began my career in the engineering department of ITC Factory and after my graduation, was appointed personal manager with the ITC. I have worked across the country with the group. I have been a part of the FKCCI for the last 35 years.

I have had the privilege of serving in various capacities and being involved in developmental projects. My work with FKCCI has taken me to Geneva, UK and Dhaka. The FKCCI in Bengaluru is one the oldest organisations and has been active in serving and fulfilling the business, trade and commerce requirements of the people for the last 100 years.

The present members of the FKCCI have formed a Centenary Celebration Committee and have proposed to redo the World Trade Centre building. The building will be called Sir M Visvesvaraya Centenary International Trade Pavilion.
