Ola, Uber not above law, must obey rules, says Deshpande

Karnataka Industries Minister R V Deshpande on Friday said taxi-aggregators like Ola Cabs and Uber India Technologies should follow rules of the country.

In an interaction with the media, Deshpande said he had already held a meeting with Ola and Uber officials. “We already have regulations. It applies to everybody. All the taxi-aggregators should follow it,” he said.

The state government is going through a court battle with the taxi-aggregators over the recently introduced Karnataka On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules, 2016.

The Minister said the government is ready to support genuine entrepreneurs who are running these cabs as part of the aggregator business.

E-commerce
When asked about the e-commerce policy to retain the state’s edge in this sector, he said the Industries Department will formulate an e-commerce policy. “The Vision Group on industries constituted by the government has given suggestion on the need for having an e-commerce policy for the state,” he said.

Deshpande said the government understands the tax issues faced by e-commerce industries in the state. “We want to resolve this issue to create a conducive business and investment environment in the state,” he said.
