BBMP works 'overtime' yet again

Congress accuses officials of violating poll code

According to the Congress activists, they were tipped-off that some ‘hectic’ activities were going on inside BBMP. Fearing that tenders were being cleared despite the election code, which came into effect from Sunday, the activists rushed to the spot in good number. They reportedly found the officials preparing budget for the BBMP.

Former mayor Ramachandrappa, who was leading the movement, alleged that the officials were preparing BBMP’s budget at Dr Govindaraj’s chamber. “This is in violation of the poll code,” he said. Ramachandrappa added that when he questioned the officials as to what they were doing, they maintained silence and left the place one by one. Later, the Congress activists submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission in this regard.

Special Commissioner Dr Govindaraj maintained that he does not decide who makes the budget copy, but only the administrator and the commissioner of the BBMP could do so. He added that their permission was required and the BBMP officials were in the process of seeking their permission because budget has to be prepared before April. He dismissed the Congress leader’s allegation. “It is their fear  that we were doing some illegal job, whereas we were only doing our office work.”

When asked why the work was done on a holiday, he said they were used to working on holidays. “Come to the BBMP office on any Sunday, half of the staffers will be working. It is the nature of our job,” maintained the official. Election commission officials were not available for comment.
