Rajmahal Palace entrance unsealed

Last Updated 04 September 2016, 20:03 IST
Putting an end to the 10-day tussle between the erstwhile royals and the state government, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on Sunday opened the main entrance to the Raj Mahal Palace heritage hotel.

The gate was unsealed after a meeting between Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raj and the Queen Mother of Jaipur’s former royal family, Padmini Devi at the former’s residence on Saturday night.

However, as per sources in JDA, the relief for the former royals is believed to be temporary as the family has been asked to have another pathway made to the hotel. The authority sealed the gate claiming ownership after it acquired public land near the hotel on August 24. A four-member committee of ministers comprising BJP state president Ashok Parnami and three cabinet ministers — Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, Rajendra Rathore and Gajendra Singh Khimsar — was formed to look into the matter. Following the committee’s recommendation, the orders to unseal the gate were issued.

Around 9 am on Sunday, enforcement officer Kishore Singh opened the gates, although security forces remained stationed there.  Padmini, after the meeting, told the media: “I am satisfied after meeting Vasundhara. As I said earlier, the chief minister is ours, the government is ours. The chief minister heard me patiently. Everything will be alright.”
