The city police on Wednesday issued an advisory to news channels and cable network operators in the city directing them to refrain from telecasting any material which could ignite passion and create law and order problem.

City Police Commissioner N S Megharikh, who is also an authorised officer under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, issued the advisory.

“Certain television channels have been telecasting provocative and inflammatory news, programmes, footage of violence, rioting repeatedly which could hamper law and order situation in the city. Hence, it is felt that news, views or comments relating to Cauvery water dispute should be telecast only after proper verification of facts and presented with due caution and restraint in a manner which is in the public interest for maintaining harmony(sic),” Megharikh stated in the advisory.

“Care may be taken in the choice of words while reporting. The telecast of live or file shots of violence may be avoided. The channels should not carry any news in such a way that it incites violence,” he suggested.

Megharikh has warned that the violation of the advisory may lead to prosecution of the offenders as per the Act.
