Replicas of Donald Duck, the cartoon character created by Walt Disney, its official mascot Mickey Mouse, and Chota Bheem, the cartoon character which broke the monopoly of foreign cartoons on Indian television, will feature in the Dasara flower show this time.

However, the main attraction will be the replica of the Gateway of India, a monument built during the 20th century in Mumbai. With only a few days left for the Dasara festivities to commence on October 1, Kuppanna Park in the city is abuzz with activities with a team of more than 50 people working round-the-clock to make the event a memorable one.

The team behind the horticultural flower show, organised by the department of Horticulture and the District Horticulture Society, has left no stone unturned to make this year’s flower show a success.

Speaking to DH, Kalidas, the florist who has undertaken the work at Kuppanna Park said, “A team of workers from West Bengal and locals are involved in recreating the Gateway of India, which will approximately measure 30 ft in height, 20 ft length and 10 ft width.”

An array of flowers, around four lakh pieces, including roses, orchids, chrysanthemums and other exotic flowers will be used. The flowers will be replaced once in between, to ensure freshness till the last day of the show, he added.

Besides, there will be replicas of Tejas aircraft, India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), the smallest and multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft and a vintage car. The florist said, “Though, most of the flowers were procured from Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, last year, this year roses are supplied mainly from Bengaluru and Pune, orchids from Goa and a few exotic flowers from Ooty.”

The flower show will display scientifically grown vegetables, fruits and a variety of flowers. The department of Horticulture has also organised a variety of competitions like vegetable carving, bonsai, flower arrangement and others. Food stalls will also be set up at the venue.
