'98 religious places attacked in 3 yrs'

In a written reply to a question raised by K Prathapchandra Shetty (Cong) in the Council on Thursday, Home Minister V S Acharya said highest number of the attacks occurred in 2008 during which 38 churches, four mosques and seven temples were attacked.

In 2009, seven temples, 11 mosques and eight churches were attacked, he stated.
In all, 105 cases have been registered and 461 persons have been arrested. In 2010, till date three temples, five mosques and six churches were attacked by miscreants, he added.
In reply to another query by K G George (Cong) in the Assembly Acharya said 258 persons have been arrested in cases related to church attacks between 2008 and 2010.

However, some of the figures furnished by Acharya in the Council does not tally with the answers provided in the Lower House.

In the Assembly Acharya said 90 cases of church attacks and related cases were registered between 2008 and 2010 and the damage due to the attacks has been estimated Rs 17 lakh. The highest number of church attacks (16) took place in Dakshina Kannada in 2008.
