Guptashettyhalli residents' dharna enters 7th day

“We are not demanding heaven. We too are the citizens of this country. We are just seeking an opportunity to live like others,” said Evacuees Struggle Committee President Bairigadde Ramesh.

The struggle of Guptashettyhalli villagers has a history of three years. The tragic story of 32 families residing in survey number 190 in Yalagudige village of Aldur hobli began on January 27, 2006.

The government evacuated them from the Saragodu reserve forest all of a sudden. Demanding rehabilitation, they staged a dharna from January 27 to March 31, which reached the then Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta.

Discussing the issue with the then Superintendent of Police Madhukar Shetty, Harsha Gupta provided 2 acre land each to the Saragodu evacuees at Yalagudige. Immediately, four families were shifted to Yalagudige for which they got Rs 5,000 transport charges also. But by that time, both of them got transferred. The officials who came after them did not pay attention to the situation.

The special compensation package announced by the district administration has not yet been released. The Forest officials are just pointing at the Deputy Commissioner.
