He told the Legislative Assembly on Friday that deputy commissioners will ensure that deserving people get the ration cards and also scrap the cards if possessed by rich people. Replying to a question putforth by N A Haris (Congress) the minister said the Centre has declared that 31.29 lakh people were eligible for BPL cards in the State. But the State government has distributed the cards to nearly one crore people. And the demand for the same is growing by the day. Thus, the government will be ascertaining if the deserving people have been receiving the ration cards.

Earlier, the members of the ruling party - C T Ravi, Appachu Ranjan, Mallika Prasad, Seema Masuti, Rahgupati Bhat and others charged that the BJP government had failed to distribute ration cards to the deserving. Hence, it would be difficult for them to face the forthcoming gram panchayat elections.

The members argued that it was improper to let the owners of fair price depots to determine who should be given the BPL or APL cards.
