Over 17,400 homeless in B'lore: Survey

Briefing the media at the premises of the Indian Social Institute at Benson Town on Friday, Indu Prakash Singh of the NGO, Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) that works for the cause of the Urban Homeless (UH) said that the figure takes into account only individuals spotted on the main streets in the City. “Homeless people found in the lanes and bylanes and those who may have left the City to their native places temporarily due to the approaching Ugadi or other reasons do not find place in the survey,” he said.

Altogether 150 volunteers were involved in the work, that took place on March 9 and 10 and covered all the eight zones in Bangalore. The break-up of the homeless in different zones is as follows: South: 2154; East: 6216; West: 4316; Mahadevapura: 1642; Byatarayanapura: 273; Bommanahalli: 2130; Rajarajeshwari nagar: 474 and Dasarahalli: 236.

Highlighting a Supreme Court order in January this year that called upon State governments to set up one shelter to cater to the homeless for every one lakh of the population, Singh said. “Bangalore must have 80 shelters for the roughly 80 lakh population in the City.”

Rajani of the NGO’s Bangalore branch said UH section encompasses those people sleeping on railway station platforms, squatting on road sides, cooking near kerbsides, fighting for sleep space on pavements or empty sites, under flyovers and religious places.
