There is always an increase in gardening activities from October onwards in view of the ensuing winter season. Harpreet Ahluwalia, founder and principal designer at Earthly Creations, shares some useful winter gardening tips to be adopted to make garden look more bright and beautiful than ever.

* The beds for winter annuals should be prepared with a mix of farm manure, leaf mould, neem khali. Pots should be filled up with well-prepared soil mixture.

* Sowing of most winter annuals should be done in nursery beds or seed pans in October itself.

* Dahlias should be propagated by root division or cutting now.

* Pruning of shrubs and climbers should continue.

* Transplant your indoor plants. Manuring should be done before onset of November.

* As the nights become cooler, lettuce, parsley and other cold-loving vegetables should be sown.

* Rose pots and beds should be properly cultivated after pruning and manuring.

* Put manure in hedges and evergreen shrubs.

* Sow gladiolus, narcissus, Iris bulbs.

* Continue de-budding the chrysanthemums and remove unwanted axial branches. Keep giving liquid manure regularly till the flower shows colour.

* By November the early flowering annuals should be put like anthmitinum, calendula, carnation and pansy.

* The lawn should be given top dressing of fertilizer, urea mixed with neem cake, and from October onwards cut grass close to the ground.

* Vegetables that can be grown in this season are beetroot, brinjal, Chinese cabbage, capsicum, chilies, fenugreek, mustard, onion, peas, potato, spinach, tomato, turnip, coriander etc.

n Common winter flowers that can be sown are petunia, antirrhinum, alyssum, aster, calendula, candytuft, carnations, cineraria, clarkia, dahlia, dimorphotheca, and gazania. hollyhock, marigold, nasturtium, pansy, phlox, nemesis, poppy, salvia, stock, sweat pea, sweet william, verbena, vinca, viola are also varied varieties available for the season.
