The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches at 40 locations across the country to corner those holding black money at currency exchange centres and hawala dealers following demonetisation.

The searches were conducted in various cities by teams comprising about 100 ED personnel and police. The ED was searching 16 locations in eastern India, including six in Kolkata, two each in Bhubaneswar and Paradip (Odisha) and Guwahati among others.

The personnel from the Kolkata zone of the ED have seized Rs 10 lakh in new currency from the premises of a doctor in the capital of West Bengal. Another Rs 4 lakh was also seized from the same area.

Black money hoarders are trying several ways to convert stashed money in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to the new legal tender after the demonetisation drive was announced on November 8.

There have been reports of people moving cash in huge amount to different locations.
