'Establish Sahitya Bhavans in all taluks'

The demand was one among the nine resolutions passed on the concluding day of the 16th district Kannada Sahitya Sammelan on Wednesday.  District Kannada Sahitya Parishat Honourary Treasurer Bhuvanabhirama Udupa presented the resolutions.

“The government should sanction Sahitya Bhavans to all taluks including the land required. At the same time, the long-pending project of Jilla Rangamandira should be completed at the earliest,” the resolution stated.

The other resolutions are as follows:

* Mangalore should be separated from Palghat railway division; and it should be included in the north-eastern division for administrative convenience.

* Kannada Bhavan should be established at the district centre for pro-Kannada activities. Schools and government buildings should be allotted for the programmes of the Sahitya Parishat.

* The anti-environmental, anti-people Netravathi river diversion project should be dropped.

* Uniform education system should be implemented by eliminating the differences between the aided and unaided Kannada medium schools.

* Vacancies in Kannada medium schools should be filled.

* Kannada should be made compulsory in English medium schools. Exams should also be conducted for the subject. Same system should be followed in the institutions of higher education too.

* Road connecting Chikmagalur and Dharmasthala via Shishila and Arasinamakki, and the one connecting Madikeri and Subrahmanya via Koojumale should be developed.

As many as 40 achievers from different fields were offered honours on the occasion. However  a few remained absent at the programme. Mumbai University Kannada Department former head Dr Taltaje Vasanth Kumar delivered the valedictory address.

Prior to this, addressing the meet, Ramachandrapura Mutt seer Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji said one should be ready to safeguard his mother tongue and culture at the cost of his own life.
