Speaking at a conference organised by the Skoch Foundation here on Wednesday, he said to modernise the police force, the 13th Finance Commission has allocated Rs 2,000 crore, the highest ever in the history of the country for this purpose.

Due to poor administration, the country has witnessed huge Naxal activities in some states as well as insurgency in north eastern states. To provide effective administration, the Centre has started bringing reforms in various wings of the government including judiciary, he added.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman Nandan Nilekani said the Unique Identification Number will bring in mobility, choice, transparency and accountability at the doorsteps of the common man.

The 16-digit unique number, which is likely to be rolled out by next year, would be a fundamental part of the next decade, he said.

He said the slogan of “bijli, sadak, pani” which talks about the need for development would now be taken over by a new catch phrase seeking bank account, mobile numbers and Unique Identification Number.

He has already initiated talks with various government departments and all state governments for bringing them on board on the project which aims to give a unique number to all residents of the country.

Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran said public private partnership is the need of the hour as the government alone can’t pump money for building large scale infrastructure facilities.

Rehabilitating the slum dwellers in the country is very challenging for the government as increasing influx of poor people from rural area searching better livelihood in urban area, he said.
