'Urbanisation brought in use and throw culture'

Speaking after inaugurating the valedictory function of two month long students’ awareness workshop on solid waste management organised by Karkala Town Municipality here on Saturday, Home Minister Dr V S Acharya said that creating awareness is absolutely the most passionate thing towards getting the work done. When it is intended towards awakening school children on a burning issue, the outcome will be astonishing. They are the future of the country and can handle the burden of reaching out the purpose, he added.

Government is into implementing all the guidelines stated by Supreme Court on solid waste management issue. Besides it is offering special incentives to the City and Town Municipalities that introduce the primary, secondary collections of wastes followed by scientific disposal in their respective areas.

Urban and rural programmes have been introduced under Nirmala Karanataka Yojane. Solid waste management is a serious issue. It is essential to maintain pollution free environment. Segregating the wastes at sources will lessen the burden. Plastic needs to be banned, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, ISRO Environment Scientist Prof V Jaganath said that there is nothing like waste in the environment. Increasing urbanisation has led to use and throw attitude among public. The Supreme Court verdict of 2000 is one of the best verdicts supporting scientific disposals of solid waste. Environment awareness about the Western Ghats seem to be decreasing in the North Karnataka region, he added. Awareness on pollution needs to be imbibed among children at a very young age. China excels all other nations when it comes to creating awareness on this particular issue. Segregation of waste should be done at the door steps, he said.

As many as 5,000 school children under went training programmes in the two month awareness workshop. Karkala MLA Gopal Bhandari, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha, Karkala d others were present.
