<p>Gudavi Bird Sanctuary, located 15 km from Sorab in Shivamogga district, is one of the major bird sanctuaries of Karnataka. Over 200 types of birds belonging to 48 species have been identified in this pristine place spread over an area of .74 square km. Birds from across the world migrate to this place. <br /><br />One can see a natural lake called Gudavi kere surrounded by giant trees here. It is common to see birds nesting on these trees. Half-submerged trees get covered by birds during winter. Another water body called Vaddekere is situated adjacent to Gudavi lake. Water from Vaddekere flows to Gudavi lake in the monsoons. These two lakes are surrounded by deciduous forest. <br /><br />The sanctuary is not only a nesting place, but also a suitable breeding site for both local and migratory birds. White ibis, grey heron, little cormorant and waterfowl are some of the commonly seen birds here. <br /><br />The sanctuary with raised platforms (watch towers) and walk bridges offers memorable birding moments not only for professionals but also for common people. A small park for kids, drinking water facility, well laid out pathways and such other facilities set up by the Forest Department make this place tourist-friendly too. <br /></p>
