‘Malleswaram Eye’, a network of CCTV cameras to monitor law and order, traffic and garbage clearance across Malleswaram Assembly constituency, was launched on Sunday.

Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation D V Sadananda Gowda launched the network with 150 CCTV cameras, (a total of 350 will be installed soon) on the 92nd birthday of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The initiative has been taken up by Malleswaram MLA C N Ashwath Narayan, in association with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The feed from the CCTVs can be accessed on a real-time basis at six police stations, seven BBMP ward offices in the constituency limits. The footage can also be accessed at the MLA’s office.

“As many as 150 CCTV cameras have been installed at major traffic junctions, market areas, bus stations, playgrounds and parks. We are planning to instal at least 50 cameras in each of the seven BBMP wards in the constituency,” said Ashwath Narayan said.

“The cost of the hardware and installation of the CCTV cameras — Rs 1 crore — is met from the MLA’s Local Area Development Fund and by the BBMP. ACT Fibernet will provide network and Internet connectivity free of cost,” he added.

“We hope the initiative will help monitor and curb traffic violations, keep a vigil on law and order, security of citizens and unauthorised dumping of debris and garbage,” the MLA said.

The BJP celebrated Vajpayee’s birthday by organising a photo exhibition and a function at the party headquarters in Malleswaram. Free health check-up camps were held across the city.
