Koragas continue to be neglected

Dept yet to utilise Rs 5.09 cr sanctioned in 2008-09

While the Central government had released Rs 3.80 crore to implement development schemes for Koragas, the State government reserved Rs 1.29 crore under the Koraga Community Development Special Scheme for the district in 2008-09. However, not even a single penny out of the total Rs 5.09 crore has been spent for the welfare of Koragas in the district, it is learnt.

As a result, the whole amount still remains in the bank accounts of the district administration for the past one year. Meanwhile, nearly 1,088 families in the district, still wait eagerly for the implementation of welfare schemes.

Though the total population of Koragas in the district is 4,990 (which is only about 2 per cent of the total population of the district), a huge fund was reserved by the Central and State governments for the development of the community. A taluk-wise action plan based on the population was also prepared.

Action plan was prepared giving importance to economic, educational and cultural development as well as for the health of the community members.  The district administration had distributed 1 - 2 acres of land to 73 Koraga families in the district.

Integrated Tribal Development Programme in-Charge Co-ordinator Dayavathi informed that the department has decided to distribute Rs 70,000 each for the rehabilitation of Koragas in the district on priority. She said that State government has already approved the action plan for the Rs 1.29 crore sanction.

The action plan of Rs 3.80 crore Central fund will also get approval soon. Development schemes can be implemented once Zilla Panchayat and Deputy Commissioner approves it, she added.
