SC verdict puts parties in a spot

Last Updated 02 January 2017, 19:10 IST

The Supreme Court verdict restricting seeking of votes on the basis of religion, race, caste, community or language has put political parties in a spot ahead of Assembly polls to five states.

A source in the BJP agreed that the party will find it difficult to invoke the Ram Temple issue to garner Hindu votes.

Similarly, it is also a setback for the Opposition and caste-based parties who cannot approach other religious and community heads to get votes for their candidates and organisations.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said he would like to go through the verdict before getting a clarity on the subject. But he stressed that “the judgement will help polls be free of parochial appeal based on caste or religion or group identity”. The BJP in general heaved a sigh of relief since the judgement did not reverse its earlier verdict that Hindutva is not a religion but a way of life.
