Four sentenced to life for Bopanna's murder

First Additional District and Sessions Court Judge D Pawanesh has sentenced four people convicted of murder to life imprisonment.

The four convicts—Tulunadanda Mahesh, Tulunadanda A Arun, Paleyanda M Mahesh and Karera U Dinesh from Kalur village in Kodagu district—were involved in the murder of M B Bopanna on January 10, 2005. Bopanna was shot dead by accomplices of Mahesh to avenge the murder bid on him (Mahesh). Bopanna and his men had tried to eliminate Mahesh near China Gate in the district in 2000.

Bopanna’s brother M B Mandappa had lodged a complaint against the four at Madikeri town police station, besides giving the names of Bottolanda P Muththanna, Ammachimaniyanda G Dinesh, Kocchera Harish, Thunkuttheera M Anniyane Thammaiah, Siddanda T Bopaiah and Kikkarahalli M S Ravi to the police.

In addition to a fine of Rs 2,000 each, the judge has sentenced Mahesh and others to additional period of life-term for hatching a conspiracy, followed by another period of life term for Mahesh for instigating others and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

Arun has been sentenced to additional imprisonment of six years for conviction under Arms Act and fine of Rs 4,000 and four years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine to Paleyanda M Mahesh under the same Act. All the sentences will run concurrently.

Mahesh, who had handed over the gun to Ravi, was found guilty and had been arrested by the police earlier. He had served as an under trial for a period of three months and five days.
The judge has directed for paying a relief of Rs 25,000 collected from the fine amount to P T Swarna wife of deceased Bopanna.
