Kodagu gears up for APMC polls

The stage is set for APMC elections in Kodagu district. The election will be held on January 12. The candidates are engaged in rigorous canvassing.

Though the election is not held under any party symbol, the political leaders in the district have taken the election seriously.

Only those who possess Pahanis are the voters in the election to APMCs. The candidates are visiting the houses of voters to convince them to cast vote in their favour. Congress, BJP and JD(S) leaders are trying their best for the victory of the candidates they support.

The district has 37 constituencies for APMCs in Madikeri, Kushalnagar and Gonikoppa. Madikeri taluk has 13 constituencies — 11 farmers’  constituencies, one merchants’ constituency and a cooperative sector constituency.

There are 12 constituencies in Virajpet taluk and Somwarpet taluk respectively.  Four persons in Madikeri have already been elected unopposed. The number of male voters is more in the election. Madikeri has 19,971 male voters and 2,289 female voters. Somwarpet has 19, 502 male voters and 4,265 female voters while Virajpet has 22,941 male voters and 6,005 female voters.

“Some land holders have left the land fallow and have migrated, the voting percentage will come down,” the candidates said.

There are 80 candidates in fray for 32 seats. Five persons have been elected unopposed. 

The counting will be held at 8 am on January 14 at Old Fort Hall in Madikeri, Virajpet Government PU College and Somwarpet Junior College.

There are 13 directors’ posts in Madikeri APMC. Among them, four have been elected unopposed.

Nineteen candindates are in the fray for nine seats.

The seats and the candidates are Peraje—Anantheshwara, Adam Kunhi; Sampaje—Choma, K K Madappa; Makkandooru—Thammaiah, A E Machaiah; Kanthooru Murnadu—Vancheera Thammaiah, P P Shashikumar; Hakathooru—Nirmala Nanjappa, P C Leelavati; Bettageri—Jayanthi R Shetty, Soodan S Erappa, Bepparana Medappa; Bhagamandala—Narayana Naik, B C Damodar; Kunjila Kakkabbe—M N Hemalatha, Karthanda Shaila Kuttappa; commission agent and merchants constituency—D N Anil Kumar and M A Mohammed Shali.
