Steep hike in DL, vehicle registration fees

Last Updated 06 January 2017, 20:04 IST

The Centre on Friday announced a hike in the fee for issue of driving licences, driving school permission, international driving permits, transfer of vehicle ownership and registration of various categories of vehicles and its renewal.

The gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport states that the new fee will come into force from December 29.

The notification also says states can levy a fee over and above the one prescribed by the Centre. However, the states should not collect a fee less than that prescribed by the Centre. Issue of a learner’s licence fee for each class of vehicle has been hiked from Rs 30 to Rs 150, while the fee for a driving licence has been increased from Rs 40 to Rs 200.

The government made two additional categories — endorsement or renewal of authorisation for vehicles carrying hazardous goods has been fixed at Rs 100, and for a learner’s licence test fee or repeat test, the public will have to pay Rs 50. Registration fee of transport, non-transport and imported bikes and cars has also been hiked. Fee for transfer of vehicle ownership, change of residential address, endorsing hypothecation agreement and conducting test of a vehicle for grant or renewal of certificate of fitness has also been hiked.
