Peenya police arrested a woman and her lover in Mandya on Friday for abducting a minor girl and forcing her into wedlock.

Police said Shantha (name changed), a resident of Mallasandra in Peenya and her lover Manju had been in an extramarital affair but Shantha was now forcing her 12-year-old daughter to marry Manju. Shantha had been married for 15 years and the couple had come to Mallasandra in search of a job. Shantha befriended Manju, who used to visit their house when her husband was away. Police said Shantha decided to get her daughter married to Manju so that she could continue her affair.

On January 6, Shantha lied to her daughter that her grandmother had died and took her to Srirangapatna. They were staying in a lodge while Manju was busy making wedding preparations in Mandya. The minor girl found something suspicious, managed to call her friend and gave her father’s mobile number to her. The girl’s father was intimated and he in turn informed Peenya police who arrested the duo from Mandya. The girl was rescued and reunited with her father, the police said.
