'Music was something that had to happen'

When Shravan Sridhar picks up his violin, he automatically turns into a storyteller. Be it one of the latest songs or a classic one, he has the knack of making waves with his music.

His latest stint with the musical chords is the medley of a few songs by A R Rahman and Ilayaraja, that is taking the internet by storm. Sharing his excitement about the release, he talks to Anila Kurian about his journey so far.

Did you always want to become a violinist?

I am trained in Indian classical vocals and violin and I’ve been practising it for about 16 years now. I’ve tried all genres of music — everything from blues to country to
metal. It’s only about a year back that I decided to become a musician. It wasn’t something that I planned on becoming; music was something that had to happen.

What was the transformation like from being a mechanical engineer to a full-time musician?

I grew up in a largely academics oriented environment, where whatever I studied was supposed to take me further in life. When I finished graduation, I worked in a corporate office for a little over a year. I was working in parallel on music projects, which included being a part of bands as well. It was a tough transformation and it took a while to finally let go off the corporate life.

A day or week in your life...

Being a musician, it is never a pre-planned one. I spend my time recording, making music videos and spending more time in the studio. To be honest, there is no average day for me. I don’t miss that consistency in my life either.

Tell us about your latest release.
My guitarist Sabi Thankachan is a good friend of mine. We were jamming one evening and we thought it would be a cool idea to mash up a few of A R Rahman and Ilayaraja’s songs. It actually just took us about 15 minutes to come up with the concept. But it took us a very long time to meet again to fine-tune it.

Since it was Rahman sir’s birthday recently, we thought that it was a good time to release this song and we had to make time for the final product. I must say that it is one of my best works.

About the music video for the song...

We worked with ‘Picturemakers Photography’ for the video and they did a fantastic job. I wanted someone to help bring out the emotion in the song with the video.

It felt natural to work with them. Even Benny Dayal found the music interesting enough to share on his social media page!

Any original music to look forward to?

I am working on a few things. It’s all work in progress and hopefully, I will have more to talk about soon.

What makes your music different from others?

I can’t compare myself to the others because they are all unique in their own way. But my taste in music is diverse and I have worked with almost all genres of music. I don’t like limiting myself to one thing.

I think what makes me different is that I not only appreciate the various genres but also attempt to play them for my audience.
