PoP Ganesha idols: HC notice to KSPCB

The high court on Tuesday ordered notice to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) in a PIL filed by Ganesha idol makers challenging the ban imposed by the board on idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and painted ones.

KSPCB has imposed ban on the use of PoP idols and has issued directions to take possession of unsold idols made of PoP, shred them and to be sent to landfill sites before January 15.

The petitioners, S Selvaraj and others have contended that the ban imposed by KSPCB will affect their livelihood as they have invested Rs 30 lakh on the raw material of PoP and due to the Cauvery water agitation, they were not able to sell even 50% of the idols that were made. They have said that they have availed loan to buy the raw materials and have sought time till October 2017 to dispose of the idols that have already been made.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice R B Budihal ordered notice and adjourned the next hearing to January 13.
