Shoe hurled at Punjab CM

A man hurled a shoe at Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while he was addressing a gathering at Ratta Khera village in Lambi on Wednesday.

Gurbachan Singh (40), an outsider to the Lambi constituency, was seated in the second row. Just as Badal finished his speech, Gurbachan removed his show and hurled it at the chief minister.

While the shoe missed its target, the police has taken the man into custody.

Gurbachan has been booked for assault and criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, assault to a deter a public servant from discharging his duty and for obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions.

It is said that Gurbachan was hurt over incidents of sacrilege of the holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib. According to the police, Gurbachan is the brother of Amrik Singh Ajnala, who is a head priest of the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’.

The chief minister said the incident has proved that the opponents have lost the game and want to scuttle a peaceful, free and fair election.

Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder also slammed the incident, saying people should vent their anger against the Badals by voting them out of power and not through such acts.

Last week, stones were hurled at the cavalcade of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
