EC censures Sakshi Maharaj

Last Updated 12 January 2017, 19:51 IST

The Election Commission has censured BJP parliamentarian Sakshi Maharaj for flouting the Model Code of Conduct by blaming a particular community for population explosion in the country and for invoking religion during electioneering.

The commission noted that Maharaj, being a reputed political leader and MP, would be “more circumspect in his public utterances during election time”. “You may also take a note that in case of any violation of MCC (Model Code of Conduct) in future, the commission shall take stern actions against you, using all powers available to it,” the poll panel wrote to the Lok Sabha member.

Earlier notice

The commission had earlier served a notice on Maharaj for making the controversial remark while speaking at a conference of religious leaders at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. “There are problems in the country because of the growth of population. Hindus are not responsible for that. Those responsible are the ones who talk of four wives and 40 children,” he had said just two days after the Election Commission announced the schedule of elections in Uttar Pradesh and four other states.
