Raja Seat loses its charm, in dire need of revamp

Raja Seat, which overlooks a picturesque valley, is one of the sought after spot in Madikeri by the visitors.

However, after visiting, many feel disappointed with lack of facilities. Raja Seat has been losing its old charm in the recent years.

Except the view from the Raja Seat, there is nothing attractive at the garden. As a result, many return home feeling let down.

Citizens feel that as Horticulture department has been entrusted with the responsibility of Raja Seat, the Tourism department has not been coming forward to take up developmental work. The musical fountain which was constructed spending lakh of rupees has become defunct for the last several months. The toy train is in name only. A fee of Rs 20 per person is collected for enjoying a ride in toy train inside the forest near Raja Seat. While it just takes the vistor one round inside the forest, the train traverses through 30 feet-long tunner covered by plastic sheets.

Play materials like swings, slides and other facilities are in a pathetic condition. In some of them, nails are coming out, posing danger to the children.

Entrance fee of Raja Seat permits the couple visit the forest adjoining the Raja Seat. As only the entry ticket will be checked at the entrance, miscreants take away liquor bottles inside the forest, thus littering the area.

Though the Horticulture department organises flower show every year to attract
the visitors, last year, the department did not show any
interest in organising the show.

The tourists feel, “There is ample of scope for developing Raja Seat as a tourist destination. Through parking, eateries, flowers one can attract the tourists.”
