Last Updated 18 January 2017, 20:17 IST

Amid protests across the state to lift the ban on Jallikattu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said he would discuss the promulgation of an ordinance to conduct the sport with the prime minister.

Panneerselvam assured the protesters that he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to ask for immediate action on bringing the ordinance.

Protesters in various districts, however, vowed to continue their agitation until the state obtains official clearance.

Thousands of youths and college students have been taking to the streets over the past few days, braving chilly nights and hot days, to demand

repeal of the ban on the bull-taming sport.

This is the first major political test for the chief minister after assuming office last month.
People are thronging the streets of Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari to express solidarity with the organisers of the sporting event.

Agitations have also been continuing for the past one week in traditional Jallikattu venues like Alanganallur and Palamedu.
