Official apathy irks weavers

In a press release, association vice-president N J Malwade said though Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa officially inaugurated the KHDC head office in Hubli a month ago, none of the officials had reported to duty so far. Indifferent attitude of the officials towards North Karnataka continues even to this day.

"The State government had taken a decision to shift the KHDC head office from Bangalore to Hubli in 1996. However, it was delayed. Therefore, handloom weavers had launched continuous agitation urging the government to shift the office to Hubli and also sought
transfer of officials to develop the sector in North Karnataka. Responding to the agitation, Minister Jagdish Shettar exerted pressure on the government. Conceding to the demand, the State government shifted the head office to Hubli and it started functioning from a rented building in 2009. Despite the government spending Rs 1.60 lakh as establishment cost and rent, no government officer is willing to come to the city. This clearly shows the apathetic attitude of the officials towards development in the region," he said.

The chief minister’s promise to send all the officials concerned to the city within a week at the head office inauguration at Nekar Nagar in city has remained unfulfilled.

Malwade demanded that the chief minister initiate stringent action against the officials for violating the government order.
